Beide, die Grafik wie auch die Malerei von Peter Birkhäuser werden in diesem Buch gewürdigt. Für den Künstler waren es zwei schwer vereinbare Arbeitswelten. Neben der Notwenigkeit mit der Grafik das Geld für den Alltag zu erwerben, stand die innere Verpflichtung einer geistigen, rational nicht fassbaren Welt, die ihn dazu drängte dargestellt zu werden. Die Interpretation der inneren Bilder beruht auf vielen Träumen des Malers und deren Deutungen durch seine Analytikerin Marie-Louise von Franz, die auf die grössere Vision des Werkes hinweisen.

Das heißt aber auf keinen Fall, dass wir uns dem modernen Wissen mit allen seinen großartigen Erkenntnissen verschließen dürfen, die übrigens nicht selten durch Träume angeregt worden sind. Where Body and Psyche Meet

Psyche and matter/body seem separate because our consciousness automatically discriminates, dividing one thing from another, and consequently struggles to grasp the essential unity of what exists. This thesis aims to present aspects of a parallelism between psyche and body/matter, proposing that the body is a field of images, events and experiences that express the overarching unity of body and psyche. The embodied symbol forming process has distinguishing characteristics, but in sickness or in health, it complements our understanding of unconscious processes, meanings and, therefore, to the process of individuation.

Psychological Interpretation of Prophet Elijah's life Story for Korean Pastors from a Jungian Perspective

This thesis is to interpret the life story of prophet Elijah for Korean pastors from a Jungian perspective. Especially it is about Elijah's individuation focusing on burnout problem. After his great victory over the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel, he was inflated and eventually was fallen in a serious depression in the wilderness.
However he was healed from depression or burnout through the encounter with the Self (numinosum) in a deep solitude (in the cave). This thesis says that it is possible for each of us to become the real self and go the way toward individuation through a bitter wilderness experience.

The Mosquito: Complexes As They Appear In The Body

The topic of this thesis was delivered in a dream and the work became an exploration into its meaning. The Mosquito, an irritating insect, is examined from a biological, mythological and psychological perspective. The bite, the buzz and the mosquito as vector of disease are explored with particular emphasis on the bite as a call to consciousness. This aspect is analysed as an expression of an aspect of the Self that is “at you” to express your creativity. This is interwoven with an investigation into the meaning of complexes as they appear in the body. For this part, bodily symptoms and disease are interpreted as a forceful demand for attention. Specifically, Multiple Sclerosis becomes the “bite” that holds the dreamer to the inner work and, ultimately, to the creative task.

The epic poem is said to be ‘Aṭṭār’s instructions on the Ṣúfί path, as well as his own deep desire for spiritual freedom over and above rule-bound Islam, materiality and Islam's rejection and evanescence of the feminine.
The Lower Limbs in Jungian Psychology: The Girl with Her Big Toe in Her Mouth

Considering the frequent occurrence of lower limbs in dreams and fantasies reported by clients under Jungian analysis, this paper investigated the symbolic meaning of this part of the body as it appears in different legends, myths, tales, literature, as well as in anthropological studies. An ancient female anthropomorphic statuette belonging to a Northern Brazilian Indian tribe, holding her big toe in her mouth was also studied as to amplify the context of this limb as far as creativity, destiny and fate are concerned.

Psychological Interpretation of Imagery Experiences in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (BMGIM) - Focused on the Cases of Two Women from a Jungian Perspective

This thesis is to understand BMGIM (Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music) imagery from a Jungian perspective. It was planned in the following structure:
1) the definition and procedures of BMGIM, music and imagery as components of BMGIM;
2) comparison of BMGIM with dream work and active imagination;
3) the symbolic meaning of two female clients’ imageries.
Through this work it was possible to confirm the following points. First, BMGIM deals with spontaneous contents of the psyche. Second, in BMGIM, the development of personality is revealed in the autonomy of the objective psyche which orients healing and wholeness. Lastly, Jungian perspective aids in understanding the meaning of the imagery. From these, BMGIM can
be seen as a useful therapeutic tool which deals with the unconscious.

Psychologisch verstanden schildert der Roman in der Form eines Einzelschicksals einen Bewusstwerdungsprozess, der eine neue religiöse Einstellung fordert. Eng verwoben mit der Geschichte eines ausgewanderten und zurückgekehrten Berglers, schildert der Roman den Einbruch der modernen Welt in die ländliche Tradition, versinnbildlicht durch den Bau grosser Wasserkraftwerke. Er zeigt, wie die Seele den rasanten Einbruch der Welt der Technik in die ländliche Tradition der Berggebiete erlebt hat. Es ist die Stimme des Unbewussten, die uns sagt, ob der erfolgte Fortschritt ein Fortschritt mit oder ohne Seele war.

Dreams and Experiences; Themes of Death and Transformation

This essay is an examination of a series of experiences working with friends and patients who have died. Throughout the narrative there are examples of how the Objective Psyche guided and supported both the patient and myself, most often through dreams. Sometimes those dreams were ones I had, sometimes the dreams came to the patient, and sometimes the events were waking life experiences. All the images ultimately had to do with transformation around the time of death.
Voluspå seen from to-day: a Search for Feminine Totality

This holy Nordic Poem is also a Creation Myth and an Apocalypse. It is written down in 66 verses in the Poetic- or Old Edda around 1200-1300. My intention has been to examine the Mythological Volve and other feminine archetypal figures and images. I realized that the main changes in the poem are connected to the appearance of fifteen feminine images. Together they represent a complete feminine image; the archetype of the feminine. These feminine aspects belong to the totality of humanity and of the human being.
The Magic Drum: Initiation and Transformation of a Skeletal Woman

This thesis, using an Inuit folk tale and clinical case material, describes an archetypal descent into the unconscious and a successful return. In the tale, a woman undergoes an experience of dismemberment followed by a gradual return, first as a skeleton woman, and then by an experience of coniunctio with her inner masculine that in turn leads to her rebirth. The clinical case presents a parallel development.

The whole thesis is centered around the amplification of the dream, about the cat as well as the goddess. The Snake, the Shaman and the Psychologist

The thesis is a theoretical description of some of the life experiences that stimulated the author's transition from Freudian to Jungian-oriented psychoanalysis.
The thesis consists of four fundamental sections:
a) An initial dream in which a central figure appears: a yellow snake. Amplifying this motive, he realizes how this symbol of renewal stimulated the beginning of his studies at the DP Centre.
b) The three conferences that he gave in Bethanien related to his interaction with the Yanomami in the Venezuelan Amazon jungle, and his studies about their creation myths and shamanic rituals were an essential element in the reuniting with the mythology and its Jungian interpretation.
c) A final dream in which a snake reappears, in an image where it is tied to a tree. This dream allowed the author to elaborate certain aspects about the risks of contact with the unconscious and the impossibility of it being controlled, as well as the necessary contact with the reptile for the development of his creativity.
d) A reflection on the reductive Freudian interpretation of the mythological universe in contrast to the richness of Jungian hermeneutics.

Jung schrieb, wir würden im Kairos vom «Gestaltwandel der Götter» leben, «dieses Anliegen...welches wir wahrhaftig nicht selber bewusst gewählt haben.» Ein mit Sinn gefüllter Lösungsansatz liegt in der bewussten, persönlichen Integration des weiblichen Eros als Ergänzung zum herrschenden männlichen Logos; dieser mündete in Aufklärung, Materialismus und Technik-Herrschaft. Der Archetyp der Grossen Mutter hingegen drückt sich aus in Märchen, Sagen Träumen. Deren schöpferischer, seelischer Hintergrund ist die Natur selbst. Wir müssen ernst, nicht bloss spielerisch mit den darin aufleuchtenden Symbolen umgehen. Damit stellen wir uns dem Kairos des «Gestaltwandels der Götter». Eine bewusste Auseinandersetzung damit ermöglicht die Annäherung von Logos und Eros und bringt die heilende Wirkung des Archetyps der Göttin hervor. So gewinnt unsere Kultur und Gesellschaft wieder Lebendigkeit und Kraft.
DIE SECHS DIENER - Zur Erlösung des Männlichen in der Frau

Mit Hilfe ihrer magischen Eigenschaften bewältigt der Königssohn die unlösbar scheinenden Aufgaben der Zauberin, führt deren Tochter in sein Schloss und schafft damit eine Verbindung zwischen zwei isolierten Königreichen.
Mit seinen Dienern verkörpert der Königssohn einen Geist, der anzuknüpfen vermag an die weibliche Spiritualität der matriarchalen Hochkulturen, wie sie verhext in Gestalt der Zauberin erscheint – als Basis für eine zeitgemässe Form, weibliches und männliches Prinzip neu zu verbinden.
Psychologisch gesehen können die Eigenschaften der Diener als hilfreiche Qualitäten auf dem Individuationsweg verstanden werden.
Das Märchen wird hauptsächlich aus Sicht der weiblichen Psychologie gedeutet. Kollektive Aspekte werden jedoch mitberücksichtigt.

Die mittelhochdeutschen Minnelieder des 12. Jahrhunderts, in denen sich ein Mann unsterblich in eine Frau verliebt, offenbaren – zumindest fiktiv – eine neue Wertschätzung der Frau und des Weiblichen allgemein, die entgegen der vorherrschenden Misogynie in jener Zeit bei Einzelnen aus dem Unbewussten hervordrängt. Der liebende Mann der Lieder gerät aber zugleich in eine Pflichtenkollision, weil das vorherrschende Gottesbild bzw. die unbedingte Verpflichtung gegenüber Gott dadurch ins Wanken gerät. Die Lieder bieten allerdings keine Lösung, da die Liebe des Mannes, obwohl unerschütterlich, unerwidert bleibt, das Dilemma fortbesteht und das neue Frauenbild in der Realität keineswegs Fuss fassen kann.
Der Schöpfungsteppich von Girona. Seine Bedeutung in unserer Zeit.

In der katalanischen Stadt Girona (Gerona) wird im Kapitelsaal der imposanten Kathedrale der sogenannte Schöpfungsteppich, «el Tapís de la Creatió», aufbewahrt, neben demjenigen von Bayeux der älteste Teppich von Europa.
Der Anthropologe und analytische Psychologe PD Dr. Hansueli F. Etter unternimmt es, die religiöse Symbolik und die Bedeutung des um 1100 entstandenen Teppichs für unsere Zeit verständlich zu machen. Als umfassendes Mandala ordnete der Schöpfungsteppich in reichen Symbolen das Gottesbild der damaligen Christen und verwies auf den inneren Zusammenhang zwischen Mensch und Gott. In ihm sind traditionelle religiöse Vorstellungen in einer Form neu gestaltet, die dem Wesen der hochmittelalterlichen Naturphilosophie und damit der Struktur des Unbewussten entspricht. Er nimmt mithin das vorweg, was sich heute in der modernen Naturwissenschaft ankündigt und in der Tiefenpsychologie von C. G. Jung Gegenstand der Forschung ist. Wie damals manifestiert sich auch heute eine archetypische Tendenz zur Integration des weiblichen und des dunklen Prinzips in die Welt des männlichen und lichten Logos.

The thesis includes a number of the author's own dreams. This thesis on the New Jerusalem represents the author's personal quest and is therefore not an intellectual problem. In coming to terms with his own God image, the author wrestles with a supposedly benevolent God, who also has an angry vengeful side and who spits out venom on his people. In his struggle with a more literal and vengeful side of God and as a member of the Seven-Day Adventist Container, the author connects to his own journey of individuation and how the unconscious has changed his life and how he has impacted the unconscious. In his work he shifts to a way of experiencing the objective psyche more personally.

Conceived of as a kind of personal memoir about the war, this work is an individual effort to elucidate meaning underlying the catastrophe of World War II. As an entry into the material, personal experience as the child of a U.S. serviceman in the Pacific Theatre, combined with a carefully developed analytic relationship to the unconscious side of that experience, is examined. The result is a story about the war discovered through analytic process, one that listens to the dreams and thus becomes a story as told by the unconscious itself. Placing this material in context with the psychology of C. G. Jung, this thesis unveils a deeply archetypal and impersonal story about the war and its meaning in context with greater humanity. The culmination yields one individual myth for our time and understands the catastrophe of World War II as a collective symptom of a changing god image.

Eros in the Ancient Levant

The evolution of these images reveals the gestation and birth of spiritual consciousness, eventually personified in the Yahweh god-image. At the same moment, the feminine disappears from Western religion. The psychological perspective on this evolution helps unveil how eros as a divine, creative phenomenon has always supported the developing god-image and may be preparing for a return to consciousness.
Die Erlösung von Maria Magdalena – Die weibliche Seite des Archetyps von Tod und Auferstehung
Laurel Howe (Denver, Colorado) wendet sich in ihrer Arbeit der ersten Zeugin von Christ Tod und Auferstehung zu - der Maria, die am leeren Grab ihre tiefe Liebe zum Auferstandenen bezeugt. Im Volksglauben blieb sie die Braut Christi, die das Geschehen am Kreuz und am Grab gefühlsmäßig verstanden und der Welt vermittelt hat. Bereits der Kirchenvater Hippolyt (170-235 n. Chr.) hat sie als solche gesehen, wobei er allerdings alle sinnlich-erotische Aspekte ausgeklammert und die liebe Maria Magdalenas rein geistig verstanden hat. Zwar gibt es viele Parallelen zwischen Maria Magdalena und den vorderorientalischen und antiken Göttinnen, doch in der christlichen Auffassung findet im Unterschied zu jenen eine klare Trennung zwischen dem körperlichen und geistigen Aspekt des Eros statt, 'indem sie den einen verdammt und den andern glorifiziert'. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass der heutige Papst Franziskus in seinem Dekret 'Aposotolorum Apostola' von 2016 Maria Magdalena in die Reihe der Apostel einreiht und damit die sinnliche und geistige Liebe zwischen ihr und dem Gekreuzigten und Auferstandenen vollumfänglich anerkennt. Laurel Howe bringt in schöner Weise zum Ausdruck, dass die Gegenwart der liebenden Frau zum Geschehen von Tod und Auferstehung Christi unbedingt dazugehört. Zwei eigene, eindrückliche Träume zeigen, wie Maria Magdalena Mut machen kann das Parradox von persönlicher und göttlicher Liebe anzunehmen. Redeeming Mary Magdalene – The Femiine Side of the Death and resurrection Archetype

Laurel Howe (Denver, Colorado) looks at the very first witness of Christ's death and resurrection - Mary Magdalene - testifying to her deep love for the risen Christ at his empty tomb. According to pope Gregor the Great (540-604 C.E.) Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, whereas in folklore she has always remained the Bride of Christ who understood on an emotional level what took place at the foot of the Cross and at Christ's tomb, and communicated this to the world. The Church father Hippolytus of Rome (170-235 C.E.) saw her as such, though he excluded all her sensual-erotic aspects and understood Mary Magdalene's love to be of a purely spiritual nature. While there are many parallels between Mary Magdalene and the Near Eastern and Ancient goddesses, the Christian concept, in contrast to them, clearly separates the physical from the spiritual aspects of eros "by condemning one and glorifying the other". It is, therefore all the more astonishing that in his decree "Apostolorum Apostoal" of 2016, today's Pope Francis placed Mary Madgalene among the apostels, thereby recognizing fully both the sensual and the spiritual nature of the love between her and the crucified and risen Christ. Laurel Howe gives beautiful expression to how the presence of this loving woman is an essential part of Christ's death and resurrection. Two of her own dreams show how the figure of Mary Magdalene encourages us to accept the paradox of personal and divine love. The Paradoxical Meeting of Depth Psychology and Physics: Reflections on the Unification of Psyche and Matter

This thesis elaborates the image of the ring i arising in dreams by Pauli and the author. As a static vision the ring i is suggestive of a wholeness and complementarity uniting psyche and matter. Its rotational aspect shows a dynamic, unfolding in time of these same qualities. As a symbol, the ring i poses an individuating challenge to maintain a living relationship with the centre, a unus mundus, whilst events unfold in the flow of one’s daily life. When one penetrates to the hidden centre of life, it no longer matters if one looks to outer life or if one looks within, one ‘sees’ the same centre. This is an extremely difficult challenge, requiring an ego that can sustain a paradoxical attitude in the flow of life, not bound or fixated in the events of the outer world or the images arising within, but experiencing both as aspects of a deeper unitary movement. It is only ever partially attained. To the extent that it is, the Cartesian split of mind and matter is overcome, not philosophically but as an attainment of individuation.
Paracelsus: «Das Buch von den Nymphen, Sylphen, Pygmaeen, Salamandern und den übrigen Geistern»

Das «Buch von den Nymphen» des Paracelsus ist allgemein bekannt als das «Buch von den Elementargeistern». Es enthält jedoch weitaus mehr Themen als die Beschreibung der Elementarwesen in ihren jeweiligen Elementen, ihrer Lebensweise, ihrer Beziehung zu den Menschen usw.
Paracelsus schrieb dieses kleine Werk wenige Jahre vor seinem Tod. Bereits in der Einleitung formuliert er einen wegweisenden Gedanken: Er schreibt über «das Licht des Menschen», das mehr ist als «das Licht der Natur». Was damit gemeint sein könnte, wird in der Thesis erläutert. Nur an ganz wenigen Stellen im ganzen Werk des Paracelsus ist vom «Licht des Menschen» die Rede.
In der Thesis werden Bezüge zur Jung’schen Psychologie aufgezeigt, und auch in Beziehung zu Paracelsus‘ Leben gesetzt. Dadurch wirken viele sonst kaum zu erklärende Aussagen in seinem Text lebendig und erstaunlich aktuell. Da Paracelsus auch als Alchemist tätig war, war ihm das symbolische Denken geläufig, und in diesem Zusammenhang gesehen eröffnet sich eine neue Sicht auf das bekannte Werk.
